Higher Trewithen Holiday Cottages, Stithians, Truro, Cornwall Aims for Top Sustainable Tourism Award

Higher Trewithen Holiday Cottages has recently joined Green Tourism, the largest and most established sustainable certification programme in the world, with the aim of achieving one of their respected Awards.

A Green Tourism Award means that a business works responsibly, ethically and sustainably, contributes to their community, is reducing their impact on the environment and aims to be accessible and inclusive to all visitors and staff. Businesses that meet the required standard receive a Bronze, Silver or Gold award based on their level of achievement.

Higher Trewithen Holiday Cottages has worked hard over the last 9 months to reduce the impact of the business on the environment, reduce our carbon footprint, improve links with the local community and help make a difference and now feels the time is right to join the programme and see what they can achieve.

Higher Trewithen Holiday Cottages will be graded on-site by a qualified Assessor against a rigorous set of criteria, covering a range of areas such as energy and water efficiency, waste management, biodiversity and social involvement and communication. Higher Trewithen Holiday Cottages has been particularly keen to reduce the use of harsh chemicals by trailing cruelty free cleaning products that are derived from natural ingredients. Electric and water usage is monitored regularly with a view to reduce energy consumption and water wastage. A number of ongoing improvements are being made to the grounds with a view to increase biodiversity and support rare breed animals. Higher Trewithen Holiday Cottages has provided in depth information to help guests understand the Green aims of the business. It is hoped that these initiatives will be scored particularly well by the Assessor.

Owners Simon and Maria Millen said: “We hope that by making small changes to the way we run Higher Trewithen Holiday Cottages, such as using energy efficient lights, reducing the use of harsh chemicals, buying local produce and using the land we have to help support rare breeds animals and improve biodiversity, we can improve the local environment for everyone and make a positive impact within both the local and wider community.”

Higher Trewithen Holiday Cottages is nestled in the small rural village of Stithians in Truro, Cornwall. Once a working farm, Higher Trewithen was converted into seven comfortable and fully equipped self-catering cottages and apartments that sleep between two and eight people, many of which are dog friendly. Higher Trewithen has the added benefit of being is positioned very close to the centre of the Cornish peninsular, consequently many of Cornwall’s tourist attractions are within easy driving distance, with both the North and South coast less than 10 miles away reducing traveller miles for those wishing to explore the wide range of delights this county has to offer.

Higher Trewithen has been providing self catering accommodation for tourists and business workers since the buildings were first converted in the early 1970s and many changes have taken place to the properties since then. In July 2016 Higher Trewithen became home to new owners, Simon and Maria Millen and their children. The new owners are passionate about the environment and have already made a number of Green improvements to the cottages and grounds and further short and long term projects are planned or already underway.
